It was a beautiful night at Mosswood Park in week 4 of the spring 2017 season of Golden State Kickball. On this night, blowouts and lopsided victories were the theme.  This was a strange week as there was only one game was a game actually worth writing about as it was the only contest that featured any semblance of competitive kickball. Read the recap in our new Game of the Week segment below!

Quick Score Recap!

In the only game of the night on Field 3, Welcome to Death Row took the scary completely out of the Nightmares on Elm Street by cruising to a G rated 19-2 win. On Field 1, Return of the Tooters captured their first win after 4 straight losses dating back to last season beating Chocolate Salty Balls 9-1. Both the later games were both easy victories for the winning sides. On Field 1, Wasted Potential crushed Turn Down for Bunt 15-2 to remain the only unbeaten team in the league and on Field 2, Almost Classy ran away with the spoon escaping the clutches of defeat with a 20-2 win over Cliqueball.

Game of the Week

In our Game of the Week, or what should be called “The only competitive game of the week” pitted two excellent offense clubs against one another. Looking to make a name for themselves, new additions Aggressively Moderate gave Slappin Da Base all they could handle. Entering the new season Slappin Da Base was picked to win the league by many GSK insiders, but an out of character loss in Week 3 had them looking up at first place Wasted Potential in the still young season. Looking to keep pace with Wasted Potential in the standings, SDB took the lead in the first inning with a booming home run putting them up 3-1. Not to be deterred, Aggressively Moderate fought back in the top of the second with well placed kicks and smart base running to tie the score at 3. In the following innings, da Base would use a combination of smart veteran defense and wily baserunning decisions to push their lead to 8-4 by the end of the fourth inning. Aggressively Moderate was down but not out as they put on their big boy drinking pants and went to work cutting the score to 8-7 with well timed kicks and some unfortunate defensive play on the part of SDB. Unfortunately for the Moderates, it wouldn’t be enough as their rally fell just short of tying the game. SDB would add an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth and locked things up in the sixth, winning 9-7 in an excellently played kickball game. Did we mention it was the only good game of the night?

Next week, Slappin da Base will go for back to back wins against Wasted Potential in a battle at the top of the standings. Meanwhile, aggressively Moderate will look to get back in the win column when they square off against Almost Classy.

Pitches Be Trippin’ defeats Wrecking Balls, 5-1

Wrecking Balls looked to solidify their place at the top of the standings while Pitches Be Trippin looked to play spoiler and move up the standings. The first inning was all Pitches getting 2 in the bottom of the 1st getting multiple base hits to right field having their top 2 of 3 lead off men score. 2-0 Pitches. Wrecking Balls couldn’t get any offense going as they constantly lined their kicks to the infielders. Some excellent defense in the second and third kept the score at 2-0, but Balls was able to break through in the 4th getting their lead off man to score with a sacrifice bunt and a base hit down left field. 2-1 Pitches. This looked like the time Balls would come back to tie or win, but Pitches was having none of that. They got their first 2 batters on base and then scored 3 more with some help with some fielding errors and timely hitting. 5-1 bottom five.  Defense held true for the rest of the game making Wrecking Balls pay and potentially losing the top seed. Down to their last chance in the sixth inning, Death Row put their first kicker on via a single. After a line out to first, the next kicker lined a double putting runners at second and third. The ball was once again flying at Mosswood Park in Oakland and Wrecking Balls was still the only undefeated team left standing.  Would it last another week or would the standings get closer?

Dad Bods shuts out Don’t Mosswood Us, 3-0

A good battle in the dirt between a pair of new teams in Dad Bods and Don’t Mosswood Us led off the early slate Thursday with defense being the key. Both teams threw up zeroes until the fifth inning and got out of crucial jams early. In the second Don’t Mosswood Us loaded the bases with none out, but Dad Bods defense buckled down and held Mosswood to a goose egg. Dad Bods then put a pair in scoring position in their bottom half of the second, but were unable to score. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Dad Bods broke the scoring seal with a pair of doubles, which drove in three runs. Toot It and Boot It defeats undefeated Wrecking Balls, 7-5

Toot It and Boot It and Wrecking Balls clashed in a close, well-played game where the momentum and the scoring swung back and forth throughout the entire match-up. TIABI started fast, using their brand of small ball to grab an 3-0 lead in the top of the first. WB responded immediately, crushing a long home run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 3. The teams continued to mirror each other, as Toot would take the lead then the Balls would come back to tie at both 4-4 and 5-5. The pattern held until the last inning. Toot kept with the small ball attack, using aggressive baserunning and a sacrifice to grab a 2 run lead. They then tightened their defense and pitching, locking down WB in the bottom of the 6th to earn the 7-5 win. In Week 8, Toot It and Boot It looks to defeat Dad Bods, while Wrecking Balls looks to bounce back with a win against Don’t Mosswood Us.

Green Grenades defeats Almo$t Cla$$y, 3-1

A great matchup in the right field corner between a pair of veteran teams. Almo$t Cla$$y got the scoring started with a single and a double to take a 1-0 lead. In the bottom half of the first, Grenades got three singles and a walk, but were unable to cash in because Almo$t Cla$$y turned a double play. Grenades however got on the board in the second using lots of small ball to tie the game at 1. Meanwhile, Grenades defense managed to shut down Almo$t Cla$$y getting three up, three down innings from the second through the fourth. In the third, Grenades used the same small ball formula they did in the second plating 2 runs to take a 3-1 lead. Almo$t Cla$$y defense stepped up the rest of the way allowing no more runs. Almo$t Cla$$y had chances to score in the fifth and the sixth with a pair of singles in each inning, but nothing more as Green Grenades took home the 3-1 victory. In Week 8, Green Grenades looks to defeat Rosé Riveters, while Almo$t Cla$$y looks to bounce back with a win against 2 Legit 2 Kick.

2 Legit 2 Kick drops Pitches Be Trippin’, 4-2

If you are a fan of offense and got to the game after the second inning, you were disappointed in the results on this matchup in the dirt between 2 Legit 2 Kick and Pitches be Trippin’. Pitches jumped out of the gate early opening the scoring on back to back two out doubles in the top of the first. 2 Legit then responded with a pair of runs to take the lead at 2-1 highlighted by a sacrifice fly. After that the defenses stepped up to the plate and retired each other in order quickly. In the bottom of the fifth, 2 Legit tacked on an insurance run on a double to right field make it 4-2. 20161013_213903

In the calm before the literal storm to hit Northern California on Friday, mother nature was kind enough for Week 6 of the Oakland Fall league to be played. With the ball flying all over Mosswood Park in Oakland Thursday, there was an unbeaten and an undefeated team left and they would be playing each other.  Also some other great matchups on the Thursday slate followed by some pizza at the bar.

2 Legit 2 Kick pulls away from Don’t Moss Wood Us, 3-0

Another rookie vs. veteran matchup that looked one sided on paper, but what a battle it was.  Don’t Moss Wood Us started out hot on defense in the first inning allowing only 1 hit. In the bottom of the second, 2 Legit got on the board getting their lead off kicker to third and then a sacrifice fly got the first run of the game. Moss Wood had an opportunity to score in the top of the third with a runner on 3rd with 1 out, but a key double play by the 3rd baseman ended their hopes. In the bottom half of the fourth, 2 Legit was able to get 2 more runs in with some timely doubles to right. Moss Wood had another chance for runs with runners on 1st and 2nd with 1 out, but a pop out to center and catching the base runner sleeping ended the inning. The game was a wash in the 6th with no scoring and 2 Legit 2 Kick took home the 3-0 victory n Week 7, 2 Legit 2 Kick looks to defeat Pitches be Trippin, while Don’t Mosswood Us looks for a win against Dad Bods.

Toot It and Boot It scores early, adds on late to defeat Pitches be Trippin’, 7-3

Toot It and Boot It jumped to a four run 1st inning after multiple singles and a 3 run homerun.  Toot It added another in the 2nd after a laser double and a fielding error. Pitches be Trippin’ threatened to score in the first 3 innings, however were unable to get a runner home. Toot It led off the 4th with a homerun that was blasted onto Field 1. Pitches Be Trippin attacked in the fourth scoring 3 runs after multiple singles and fielding errors. Solid defense from both teams finished the last 2 innings to cap the game off and securing the Toot It and Boot It win. In Week 7, Toot It and Boot It looks to take down Wrecking Balls, while Pitches be Trippin’ looks to get a win against 2 Legit 2 Kick

Rosé Riveters downs Almo$t Cla$$y, 9-4

In a seemingly even matchup of two teams looking to climb up the standings, the early game on Field 3 turned out to one a one sided affair. Rosé Riveters came out swinging in the first inning plating two on excellent kicking and some mistakes defensively by Almo$t Cla$$y to take a 2-0 lead.  Adding to their lead in the second, the Riveters plated 3 more runs on back to back RKI singles as Cla$$y continued to having defensive issues out in the field. Not letting the 5 run deficit get the best of them, Almo$t Cla$$y continued to battle and made up some ground scoring 3 runs in their half of the third to make it 5-3. Unfortunately the close score would not last as Riveters once again pushed two runs across on a booming home run in the bottom half of the third to extend their lead to 7-3. Classy would get another back in the fourth but would continue to have issues on the defensive side of the ball as the Riveters scored more in the fourth to put Cla$$y down for good. The rest of the game went without an exciting moment and Rosé  Riveters walked away with a 9-4 victory. In Week 7, Rosé Riveters looks for a win against Welcome to Death Row, while Almo$t Cla$$y looks to bounce back with a win against Green Grenades.

Green Grenades scores early and often, pummels Dad Bods 15-0

A mismatch on paper also turned into a mismatch on the field as Green Grenades used excellent offense and defense to put away the Dad Bods. Starting out their offensive attack quickly, Green Grenades opened the first with a three run home run to dead center field to take a 3-0 lead after one. Home runs in the following innings pretty much locked things up for the Grenades as they lead 10-0 after just three innings. There was nothing Dad Bods could do to match the firepower of Grenades and routinely struggled to get anything going offensively. In the innings in which the Bods did get something going the well placed defense of the Grenades shut them down. Dad Bods were only able to get one runner to third base all game. The Grenades scored 5 additional runs in the final 3 innings going on to win 15-0. In Week 7, Green Grenades looks for a win against Almo$t Cla$$y, while Dad Bods looks for a win against Don’t Mosswood Us.

Death Row came strong in the 4th as well with 4 runs after loading the bases, followed by a bases clearing single. Things settled down down in the 5th with a scoreless inning from both teams. Wrecking Balls put the icing on the cake with 3 more runs in the 6th. Death Row threatened to score in the 6th with runners on 1st and 2nd, but were unable to get them across home plate. In Week 7, Wrecking Balls looks to stay undefeated against Toot It and Boot It, while Welcome to Death Row tries to bounce back against Rosé Riveters.

In Week 6, Pitches Be Trippin will look to defeat Toot It and Boot It, while Rosé Riveters looks to take down Almo$t Cla$$y.

Welcome to Death Row escapes Dad Bods, 6-5 to stay unbeaten

When both teams are playing cup in hand, you get an entertaining game, with many twists and turns. In the first inning, Dad Bods and Welcome to Death Row both found holes in each others defense and we were knotted at three after one. In the second inning Dad Bods took a 5-3 lead by loading the bases with one out and a single and a sacrifice fly. For the next two innings, the defenses stepped up and held the other team scoreless. In the bottom of the fourth, Welcome to Death Row kicked back to back doubles and then two kickers later, tied the score at 5. After another single, Death Row had the lead 6-5. With the fifth inning the last inning due to time, Dad Bods had one last shot. After a one out single, Dad Bods kicked a ball to left field, but the fielder made an outstanding sliding catch, with beverage contents flying everywhere. In Week 6, Welcome to Death Row looks to take down undefeated Wrecking Balls, while Dad Bods looks to bounce back with a win against The Green Grenades.

Wrecking Balls pulls away late from 2 Legit 2 Kick, 4-2 to stay undefeated

With the score knotted at one, the wreckers took a 3-1 lead on some excellent bunts and place kicking. 2 Legit squeezed a run across using the same thing.  Wrecking Balls then picked up an insurance run to extend their lead and they would need it. 2 Legit in the sixth had a last chance and cut the Balls lead to 4-2 quickly. However, with the tying run on base, Wrecking Balls closed out the win. In Week 6, Wrecking Balls looks to stay undefeated by beating unbeaten Welcome to Death Row, while 2 Legit 2 Kick looks to bounce back with a win against Don’t Mosswood Us

Green Grenades defeats Don’t Mosswood Us, 6-1

Green Grenades jumped out to an early lead in the 1st inning, plating 4 runs off well placed kicks, and a 3 run homer to right field. Green Grenades continued to get multiple runners on base however they had difficulty getting them across the plate in the 2nd, and 3rd innings. Don’t Mosswood Us played great defense in the outfield saving some potential home runs. In the 6th, Mosswood’s leadoff kicker blasted a ball all the way to the big tree in left field for a triple. They were then able to get that run across with 2 outs remaining, however left 2 runners stranded on base to end the game. In Week 6, Green Grenades looks to defeat Dad Bods, while Don’t Mosswood Us looks to take down 2 Legit 2 Kick.

Bar Report

Finally, King of the Hill was back and the battle was down to a pair of Wrecking Balls, Johnathan N. and Eric D. with Johnathan taking the crown. As for the rest of the evening, you can use your imagination on how it went, but pardon our language with this quote… “Bar was a shitshow. Lots of people. The end.”

Stay tuned for next week…….It can’t get any worse can it?

At the near midway point of the season, teams are starting to hit their stride at Mosswood Park in Oakland. With a pair of unbeatens left, would this last another week? The red rubber ball was once again flying around the field.

Wrecking Balls knock off the explosive Green Grenades, 5-4

Runs were scarce in the matchup on the grass between Almo$t Cla$$y and Pitches be Trippin. Almo$t Cla$$y jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead on a double and a triple. It could have been more, but a great relay throw to home by Pitches nailed the runner at home plate. In Week 5, Almo$t Cla$$y looks for a win against Toot It and Boot It, while Pitches be Trippin’ looks to defeat Rosé Riveters.

2 Legit 2 Kick shuts down Dad Bods, 11-0

The game between Dad Bods and Too Legit to Kick began with the Bods’ usual beer shotgunning ritual while the 2L2K players were trying to find someone to watch all their dogs. Seriously. The game itself became a clinic on small ball offense, with 2L2K relying almost exclusively on bunts and sacrifices. 2 Legit put up three runs in both the first and third innings without the ball leaving the infield to take the early 6-0 lead. 2L2K did break out the long ball in the fourth inning with a 2-run home run to put the game out of reach. DB was energized and game throughout, but struggled to get runners on against the Legit defense. The Bods did improve and started putting runners on in the later innings, but their best scoring threat ended in the 5th when the Legit center fielder made a juggling circus catch on his back for the third out. 2 Legit added some more bunting and defense in the 6th inning to close out the 11-0 win. In Week 5, 2 Legit 2 Kick looks to defeat Wrecking Balls, while Dad Bods looks for a win against Welcome to Death Row.

Rosé Riveters had trouble getting the big kick on this night with their best scoring chances in the third and fifth innings, but were unable to score. Toot It added an insurance run in the sixth and finished off the shutout, 4-0. In Week 5, Toot It and Boot It looks to take down Almo$t Cla$$y, while Rosé Riveters looks to defeat Pitches be Trippin.

Welcome to Death Row defeats Don’t Mosswood Us, 8-0

The inmates of Welcome to Death Row were looking to stay unbeaten, while Don’t Mosswood Us was looking for their first win of the season. Death Row quickly jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first highlighted by a two run double. Death Row would tack on a run in the second and two in the third to extend their lead to 8-0. Dad Bods struggled on offense all night, with the Balls’ defense and pitching limiting the Daddys’ scoring opportunities. DB’s lone bright spot on offense was a booming two-run home run down the left field line in the bottom of the second inning to briefly cut into the WB lead. The Daddies tried to stem the tide on defense, but a huge five run 4th inning for the Balls put this one out of reach. The Wrecking MVP of the game was 3/3 with 3 home runs and 8 Runs Kicked In, which was more than enough to ensure a comfortable 15-2 win. In Week 4, Wrecking Balls looks to defeat The Green Grenades, while Dad Bods looks to get on the winning track when they play 2 Legit 2 Kick.

A battle between a pair of veteran teams took place on the dirt The Green Grenades shot out in front early with a five spot in the second inning over Welcome to Death Row. Death Row clamped down on defense as one of their outfielders robbed a kicker of extra bases with a great running catch in right centerfield. This propelled the inmates to tie the game in the fifth inning on some smart base running and good place kicking. Grenades had their chance to take the lead in the top of the sixth with a runner on first and two out, but Death Row was able to get out of it. Wrecking Balls demolishes Rosé Riveters, 11-2

THEY CAME IN LIKE A WRECKING BALL!!!! HAD SOME ROSÉ AND DRANK IT ALL!!!  The defending champs flexed their muscles in Week 2 with an offensive bonanza, yet we saw Rosé Riveters have some fight in them giving Wrecking Balls a little scare. The Balls got things started with multiple hits with their first three kickers and then a deep kick to center to get three runs in.  Wrecking Balls added another and it was 4-0 after the first. Rosé showed up in the second getting their first two kickers on base and then a line drive down third base got a run in. 2 Legit 2 Kick drops Toot It and Boot It, 4-2

Two teams with names that are way too long squared off in the late outfield game, with 2 Legit 2 Kick taking on Toot It and Boot It. 2L2K started the game quickly, loading the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first. It looked like the TIBI defense would squirm out of the jam, but Legit strung together several two out base hits to jump out to a 4-0 lead. However, that’s all they would get as the Toot’s defense and pitching buckled down and shut out 2L2K  for the rest of the game. Toot It kept getting base runners on but couldn’t get the clutch kick they needed to dent the plate. That finally changed in the top of the 4th with a booming triple that scored two runs. Toot had the momentum… and then the lights went out. Again. Thanks OPR. When the lights came back on, 2L2K’s defense had regrouped, working out of the inning with no further damage, and shutting out TIBI for the final two innings, earning a 4-2 win. In Week 3, 2 Legit 2 Kick faces off against Rosé Riveters, while Toot It and Boot It looks to get on the winning track against Don’t Mosswood Us.

Spectacular defense by both teams for innings 2 through 4 concluded with multiple 3 up, 3 down innings. 2 Legit 2 Kick needed some help and the OPR gods provided some with a 15 minute black out to help them reconvene. The timeout helped with 2 Legit get back in the game having their leadoff hitter get to third and a base hit getting the run across cutting the Grenades lead to 2-1.  Grenades locked down their defense in the sixth with another 3 up, 3 down shutting down the hopes for 2 Legit. Final score, Green Grenades: 2, 2 Legit 2 Kick: 1. In Week 2, Green Grenades look to defeat Welcome to Death Row, while 2 Legit 2 Kick looks to get a win against Toot It and Boot It.

Quarterfinals

#3 2 Legit 2 Kick Escapes #6 Almo$t Cla$$y 3-2 in 8 innings

Sixth seeded Almo$t Cla$$y and third seeded 2 Legit 2 Kick led off the tournament with an all-time classic, featuring great defense and two teams that really didn’t want their season to end. The first half of the game was scoreless, with both teams trading double plays and 3 up/3 down innings, with no runners even reaching third base. Cla$$y broke through in the top of the fourth, with some veteran, aggressive baserunning that led to 2 runs. 2 Legit responded in the bottom of the inning, getting a clutch 2-out base hit to cut the Cla$$y lead in half, 2-1. The score stayed that way to the bottom of the sixth. Faced with a do-or-die situation, Legit was indeed legit, starting off the inning with a double and a triple to tie the game and putting the potential winning run on 3rd with no outs. However, Classy came up with a season-saving defensive play, throwing out the runner at home when he tried to score on a shallow fly ball. Ties in a tournament mean one thing of course – bonus kickball!! The score remained knotted until the bottom of the eight inning, when 2 Legit was able to get 2 runners on early in the inning. This time the clutch kick was there, a clean single to left plating the final run and giving 2 Legit a walk-off 3-2 win. 2 Legit 2 Kick moves onto the Semifinals while Almo$t Cla$$y completes their season at 4-6.

#5 Hey Girl, Let’s Kick It takes down #4 Juan and the Cochinos, 3-2

The matchup between Juan and the Cochinos was a well played and tight knit affair that came down to one inning and a couple of plays. This game was as advertised as both of these teams were in the middle of the pack the entire season with the season series tied at one. In the top of the first 2 Legit had their kicking shoes on plating three runs with two outs. The Cochinos had trouble getting their offense, going and finally broke through in the fourth inning on a pair of place kicks to right field. On the flip side, 2 Legit had trouble scoring the rest of the game. While they had chances, they could not add on to their lead. In the bottom of the fifth, the Cochinos put runners on second and third with 2 out and had the chance to take the lead, but a ground out to first squashed that threat. With Juan and the Cochinos down to their last chance in the sixth, they loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a single with one out.  A sacrifice fly to left cut the 2 Legit lead to 3-2, but then another flyout to left secured the win for Hey Girl. Hey Girl, Let’s Kick It moves onto the Semifinals, while Juan and the Cochinos completes their season at 4-5-1

Schoolyard Bullies would strike back to score one run in the first off a single, and another run off fielder’s choice. The defense showed up in the 2nd thru 4th innings, although both teams threatened to score multiple times, they were held to goose eggs. Schoolyard Bullies truck again in the fifth scoring 2 runs off multiple singles and quick base running. The inmates down to their last breath had a chance to tie the game in the sixth with a pair of runners on, but a force out at third based sealed their fate and closed out Death Row’s season. Schoolyard Bullies advances to the Semifinals, while Welcome to Death Row finishes their season at 2-6-2.

In the third, Saved by the Ball extended their lead to 6-0 highlighted by a defensive miscue that plated two runs.  Unlike the first game, Hey Girl had trouble scoring early and often going quickly in most of their innings.  In the fourth, Saved by the Ball put the game away for good plating 4 more runs to take a 10-0 lead using their outstanding place kicking that helped them out throughout the regular season. In the sixth, Hey Girl picked up on a run on some very aggressive base running, but the deficit was too large to overcome as Saved by the Ball won 10-1. Saved by the Ball advances to compete for the 2016 Summer Swenson Cup, while Hey Girl, Let’s Kick it completes their season at 5-5-1.

#2 Schoolyard Bullies pulls away from #3 Legit 2 Kick, advances to Championship

The Bullies opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, rebounding from a great 2 Legit double play to take a 1-0 lead. 2 Legit responded immediately, tying the score in the top of the second on an aggressive tag up on an infield pop out. The Bullies retook the lead in the bottom of the inning 2-1, but a good relay to the plate cut off any additional scoring to keep the game close. 2 Legit threatened again, loading the bases in the top of the third, but this time the Bullies defense was up to the task and no damage was done. That wasn’t the story in the bottom of the inning, as the Bullies offense erupted for four runs with great kicking and smart aggressive baserunning. 2 Legit was able to scratch back one run in the top of the fourth to make the score 6-2, but both defenses locked it down from there on out, highlighted by 2 Legit turning the rare triple play in the bottom of the fifth to squash a Bullies rally. With the 6-2 win, Schoolyard Bullies advances to the Championship game, while 2 Legit 2 Kick completes their season at 6-4-1.

2016 Summer Swenson Cup Finals

Schoolyard Bullies claim 2016 Summer Swenson Cup over Saved by the Ball 6-2

In the end, the battle of the Swenson Cup was between the two best teams all season long with second seeded Schoolyard Bullies and top seeded Saved by the Ball. The Bullies started off fast, loading the bases in the top of the first and taking a quick 1-0 lead. However, a second run was thrown out at the plate, and Saved by the Ball turned that into offensive momentum in the bottom of the inning, cashing in their own bases loaded opportunity and knotting the score at 1 a piece. The defenses settled in at that point, with empty base paths and great plays being the norm until the fourth inning. The Bullies found their offense rhythm and some gaps in the Balls defense, using small ball and smart base running to plate 3 runs and take a 4-1 lead. Saved by the Ball wasn’t done, responding with a run in their half of the fourth to cut the lead to 2. The Bullies had their offense locked in though, keeping the pressure on the Balls defense, scoring a run in the fifth and tacking on two more in the sixth. The Balls offense tried to respond, but the Bullies defense and pitching was just too strong, shutting Saved by the Ball out for the rest of the game and clinching the 7-2 win and the 2016 Summer League Swenson Cup Title. Schoolyard Bullies completes their Championship season with a 9-2-1 record, while Saved by the Ball is the runners up finishing their season at 8-3-1.
