Holiday’s in July? Why not? Kickballers dusted off their holiday clothing to celebrate the Holidaze Thursday night at Mosswood Park. Ballers busted out the ugly sweaters and the fancy holiday hats, but the ball was still flying all over Mosswood Park. Let’s get to the recap of Week 6 games at Mosswood Park in Oakland.

Saved by the Ball and Schoolyard Bullies settle for 5-5 Draw

Christmas came early for Kickball fans as 2 of the top 3 teams in the league played an epic match only to be overshadowed by controversy in the last innings. Saved by the Ball got things started in the top of the first by getting their leadoff kicker in scoring position and then base kicking them in for the first run. Schoolyard Bullies fired back in the bottom of the first using the same strategy for their first run. The party didn’t end there with a 2 run homer toward deep right that gave the Bullies a 3-1 lead.  In the top of the third, the Balls would answer back with some more impressive base hitting to close the gap to 1 run. The Bullies know how to take a punch and punch back adding another run in the 3rd to make it 4-2, Bullies. With both teams playing great defense, it looks like the Bullies were going to hold on, but the Balls stormed right back in the 5th getting their 2 leadoff batters on base and a base hit getting both runs in tieing the game. In the bottom of the fifth, he Bullies had an impressive hit down the right field line that looked like a home run. Unfortunately, a misread signal by the ref left the fielder’s paralyzed and it was determined it was a going to be a ground rule double. No sweat for the Bullies as they knocked the run in with the next kick and taking a 5-4 lead. In the top of the 6th, the Balls showed some real heart getting a base hit with 2 outs, scoring the game tying run. Bullies locked down their D and forced at least a tie. In the bottom of the 6th, Bullies had runners on 1st and 2nd and their batter kicked a line drive to right field looking like the game winning hit. Suddenly, the base runner ran into the 2nd baseman inflicting an interference call. The Bullies couldn’t recover and the game ended in a 5-5 tie. In Week 7, Schoolyard Bullies looks for a win against Welcome to Death Row, while Saved by the Ball looks to take down Juan and the Cochinos.

Pitch Slap and Juan and the Cochinos battle to 2-2 Draw

Defense was a plenty in the game between Pitch Slap and Juan and the Cochinos on the left field grass. Cochinos picked up an early run using small ball and a sacrifice fly. In the bottom half of the first, Pitch Slap loaded the bases on three straight singles. Cochinos pitching and defense then stepped forward and retired the next three kickers on three pop ups to the left side of the diamond. After a scoreless second, the Cochinos tacked on another run via the small ball and took a 2-0 lead. In the bottom half of the fourth Pitch Slap rallied to tie the game with two out. A pair of singles and a ground out put runners at second and third with two out. The next kicker lined a triple to centerfield tying the game. Both teams had scoring chances in the end to take the lead, but were unable to convert and the game ended in a 2-2 draw. In Week 7, Juan and the Cochinos faces off against Saved by the Ball, while Pitch Slap looks to take down Hey Girl, Let’s Kick It.

Welcome to Death Row and 2 Legit 2 Kick Draw at 1-1

This was a game between two veteran teams whose defense stepped up and scoring was at a premium. Welcome to Death Row got the scoring started with a leadoff single and slowly worked their way around the bases until a short pop up to right field scored the run. Both teams had leadoff runners in every inning, but were unable to get them around to home plate. In the fifth, 2 Legit’s leadoff kicker got on base and moved to second base on a groundout. After an infield single there were runners on first and second with one out. A slow roller to the shortstop forced the runner at second base, however the runner from second was aggressive and scored without a throw. In Week 7, 2 Legit 2 Kick looks to take down Almo$t Cla$$y, while Welcome to Death Row looks to defeat Schoolyard Bullies.

Hey Girl, Let’s Kick It gets First Win of season, drops Almo$t Cla$$y, 8-2

The matchup between Almo$t Cla$$y and Hey Girl, Let’s Kick it was a good one with Hey Girl picking up their first win on the using using a big five run maximum inning. In the top of the first Hey Girl got the scoring started with some very good place kicking to take a 1-0 lead. Almo$t Cla$$y responded right back in the bottom half of the first inning using the same formula as Hey Girl did. In the top of the second, Hey Girl used the same formula as the first and took a 2-1 lead. Meanwhile Almo$t Cla$$y started to struggle with their clutch kicking having threats, but could not score. In the fourth, Hey Girl pitched up the aforementioned five spot using excellent place kicking again. Almo$t Cla$$y responded with a single run in the bottom of the fourth, but Hey Girl’s defense held Almo$t Cla$$y down. Hey Girl picked up another run in the top of the sixth and got their first win of the season. In Week 7, Hey Girl, Let’s Kick It looks to defeat Pitch Slap, while Almo$t Cla$$y looks to defeat 2 Legit 2 Kick

After fierce competition at the fields Thursday night, kickballers made their way to McNally’s to chill out. Almo$t Cla$$y and Schoolyard Bullies battled it out on the flip cup table with other teams sending back some representatives as well. In the front, teams cheered for their team shots, birthdays were celebrated, and dancing ensued with ballers taking control of the jukebox. There was no KOTH for a second week in a row.

It was a cool and blustery night in Oakland Thursday as Week 5 of the Summer 2016 season got underway. While the ball flew all over Mosswood Park, the standings were still muddled with 6 of the 8 teams within 3 points of first place. Let’s get to the recaps to see how your favorite team did. There may have been no theme, but there was Pizza at the bar for all of the hungry kickballers.

Juan and the Cochinos shuts out Almo$t Cla$$y, 1-0

In a match-up between two veteran teams, defense was the name of the game. Juan and the Cochinos kicked a pair of singles in the top of the first, but were unable to score due to Almo$t Cla$$y outstanding defense. Almo$t Cla$$y had a golden opportunity in the bottom of the second with runners on first and third with one out, but a pop up and a strikeout ended that threat. Pretty much all game, the defenses stepped it up when they needed to. In the top of the fifth, the Cochinos led off with a single and a well placed bunt moved the runner from first to third. After an infield single put runners on the corners, a slow roller was kicked to the right side and Almo$t Cla$$y could only get the force out at second base and the Cochinos took a 1-0 lead. Almo$t Cla$$y had a chance in the bottom of the sixth inning with a leadoff single, but the runner was to get no further and Cochinos won by the slimmest of margins. In Week 6, Juan and the Cochinos looks to defeat Pitch Slap, while Almo$t Cla$$y looks to get a win against Hey Girl, Let’s Kick It

2 Legit 2 Kick scores early, hangs on for 4-2 win against Hey Girl, Let’s Kick It

If you pulled up your lawn chair in the second inning between 2 Legit 2 Kick and Hey Girl, Let’s Kick It, you missed most of the offense, which happened to be five runs. 2 Legit came out of the gates hard with some excellent place kicking to score a pair and then add on another. They would have had a fourth run, but Hey Girl, played a perfect relay in order to get the runner out at home. Hey Girl parlayed the defensive play into a pair of runs in the home half of the first with a run scoring single and a double to the gap in left field. The rest of the way was the story of missed opportunities for both teams except for the third inning, where 2 Legit picked up an insurance run on a two out double. Hey Girl, had a chance to score in the third and the sixth, but were unable to push any runs across. In Week 6, Hey Girl, Let’s Kick It looks to beat Almo$t Cla$$y, while 2 Legit 2 Kick looks to take down Welcome to Death Row.

Saved by The Ball and Welcome to Death Row Suspended in Sixth

A back and forth game between Saved By the Ball and Welcome to Death Row was not for the faint of heart. Saved by the Ball jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first using small ball and then some excellent place kicking. In the bottom of the second, Death Row responded with a two out rally plating three runes and tying the game, highlighted by a two run, two out single to right field. In the fourth and fifth, Saved By the Ball came back with a one and two runs respectively again on some well placed kicks. Using their two out magic once again, the inmates of Death Row picked up a two out double with runners on first and third to plate a run. The rally for the inmates could have continued, however the runner got too aggressive and was thrown out after overrunning third. After a scoreless top of the sixth by Saved by the Ball and with the inmates down to their last kick, Death Row led off with a single to left field. Unfortunately, the lights went out suspending the game, so the teams headed to the bar with the game to be completed at a later date. In Week 6, Saved by the Ball looks to defeat Schoolyard Bullies, while Welcome to Death Row looks to get a win against 2 Legit 2 Kick.

Schoolyard Bullies Walks Over Pitch Slap, 5-0

Unfortunately, Pitch Slap decided to head to the bar earlier than expected and Schoolyard Bullies wins in a walk over 5-0. However not all was lost as Hey Girl, Let’s Kick it scrimmaged with them for fun. In Week 6, Schoolyard Bullies faces off against Saved by the Ball and Pitch Slap will face Juan and the Cochinos

With Pizza at the bar for all kickballers in attendance, the flip cup was still great, but King of the Hill was postponed for this week. After eating pizza, kickballers made their way to the front to dance and drink off the calories. Will King of the Hill return next week? Stay tuned!

Week 4 was upon Summer 2016 – Oakland at Mosswood Park on Thursday and the top of the standings were up for grabs with 5 teams at 2-1. How would the results play out for the evening games? On a cool and calm night at Mosswood Park in Oakland, the ball was flying all over as usual.

Welcome to Death Row defeats Pitch Slap, 7-4

Welcome Death Row quickly jumped out of the gate against Pitch Slap with a five run barrage of runs. Pitch Slap responded with a 4 run rebuttal in the first to make things interesting. The defenses for set in for the next 2 innings where balls were enveloped by the outfield on both squads. Death Row snuck in a run in the bottom of the fourth inning with some great base running. Death Row picked up a pair of insurance runs in the top of the 6th from overthrown balls and aggressive base running. Pitch Slap threatened a comeback in the 6th, but was unable to execute the comeback and push any runs across. Welcome to Death Row moves to 2-1-1 on the season and plays Saved by the Ball in Week 5, while Pitch Slap drops to 0-4 and looks to get their first win of the season against Schoolyard Bullies.

Saved by the Ball drops 2 Legit 2 Kick, 3-1

In a great game between two 2-1 teams on the grass, the match between between Saved by the Ball and 2 Legit to Kick was a defensive battle. In the bottom of the first Saved by the Ball jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a pair of singles. From then on the defenses locked in and threw up goose eggs. Saved by the Ball would tack on a third run in the third on a two out single scoring the runner from third base. In the top of the fourth 2 Legit 2 Kick got on the board on a one out force out plating a run from third. The fifth inning turned out to be the difference though as 2 Legit to Kick got their first two runners on and then kicked into a 4-3-1-7-1 (second, to first, to the pitcher to the left fielder and back to the pitcher) triple play, a super rarity in kickball. From there Saved by the Ball cruised to the 3-1 victory and moved to 3-1, while 2 Legit 2 Kick dropped to 2-2. In Week 5, Saved by the Ball looks for victory against Welcome to Death Row, while 2 Legit 2 Kick looks to get back on the winning side when they play Hey Girl, Let’s Kick It.

Schoolyard Bullies takes Almo$t Cla$$y out back, beats them 12-3

The battle between veteran teams at 2-1 in Schoolyard Bullies and Almo$t Cla$$y was close early on, but two innings were the entire difference. Almo$t Cla$$y had a 3-2 lead after the second inning on a myriad of singles and could have had more, but were they were not able to punch any across. Bullies also had their chances to score more, but they finally busted out in the third and fourth scoring 9 unanswered runs to take the game. Bullies kicked more singles to plate 5 in the 3rd and then used the same recipe to pick up 4 more in the fourth. Almo$t Cla$$y tried to comeback, but was not able to get the big kick that they needed. Almo$t Cla$$y had multipe runners on in the fifth and sixth, but the no one crossed and Bullies took the 12-3 victory to the house. Schoolyard Bullies moves to 3-1 on the year and faces Pitch Slap in Week 5, while Almo$t Cla$$y drops to 2-2 and faces Juan and the Cochinos in Week 5

Juan and the Cochinos stymie Hey Girl, Let’s Kick It, 4-1

Another battle of veteran teams between Juan and the Cochinos and Hey Girl, Let’s Kick it took place on the grass. In the top of the first, the Cochinos plated a pair on a triple and also a double to right. In the bottom of the first, Hey Girl got a run right back using small ball.  For the next three innings, the defenses stepped up for both teams getting numerous three up, three down innings. The Cochinos would plate insurance runs in the fifth and sixth to extend their slimmest of margins lead. Hey Girl, had a chance to tie or win the game with the bases loaded and two outs, but a pop up to third base ended the hopes for Hey Girl. Juan and the Cochinos move to 3-1 and play Almo$t Cla$$y in Week 5, while Hey Girl, Let’s Kick It drops to 0-3-1 and looks for their first win of the Summer campaign, when they play 2 Legit 2 Kick.

Another Thursday, another night of kickballers drinking and schmoozing at McNally’s. Would Stretch buy another pound of shrimp for his late night snack? Would another Almo$t Cla$$y member take the KOTH title? Will anybody remember the events to write about them in the morning? Luckily, you’re about to find out! Sorta…Almo$t Cla$$y dominated the flip cup table for the majority of the night. Sophie from Cla$$y was desperate to retake the throne of KOTH but Eric, from Schoolyard Bullies, wanted to prove that other teams can play, too. Unfortunately, he fell short, and Sophie wound up victorious. Trent from Juan and the Cochinos and Schoolyard Bullies teammates Steven and Jon rounded out the Top 5, respectively. Meanwhile, there was excessive beer flowing in the front and back with kickballers taking over the juke box. For a second week in a row, Selena’s song, Bidi Bidi Bom Bom was played, which got the front of the bar dancing. Will anybody besides an Almo$t Cla$$y member take the KOTH title this season? Will GSK continue to purchase too much beer? Stay tuned…

On a cloudy and cool night in Oakland, there were still two undefeated teams left in Summer 2016 league play.  Would they both still be undefeated by the end of the night? This week’s theme piggybacked on the 4th of July holiday and kickballers dressed up in their best Red, White and Blue. Pabst Blue Ribbon was the sponsor and the winner of the best dressed contest was Heather from Hey Girl, Let’s Kick It. For her onesie Wonder Woman America themed costume, she received a PBR jumbo sized placard, a PBR hat, beanie and also a PBR drawstring bag. How would her team and the rest of the teams do this week?

Welcome to Death Row hands Almo$t Cla$$y first loss, wins 6-3

The battle between veteran teams Welcome to Death Row and Almo$t Cla$$y on the Pabst Blue Ribbon Field was a shootout in the first inning, but turned into a defensive battle later on. Undefeated Almo$t Cla$$y jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first highlighted by a two run double to left field. Welcome to Death Row was not going to go away however and methodically used a double and a sacrifice fly to plate two runs of their own. After that the offenses for both teams went into hibernation. In the bottom of the fourth, the inmates threw the big blow in kicking a two run homer and plating four runs in the inning and taking a 6-3 lead. Almo$t Cla$$y tried to comeback, but their chances of winning the game and staying undefeated went by the wayside. In Week 4, Welcome to Death Row looks to keep up the winning momentum, when they play Pitch Slap, while Almo$t Cla$$y looks to bounce back with a win against Schoolyard Bullies

Schoolyard Bullies drops Hey Girl, Let’s Kick It, 6-1
If you got into your seat by the third inning, you missed all of of the offense in the match up between Schoolyard Bullies and Hey Girl Let’s Kick It. Hey Girl, Let’s Kick It loaded the bases to start the game off using some smooth bunting and baserunning. One run was scored off a sac fly, but they were unable to get anymore. Schoolyard Bullies also loaded the bases in the 1st and were able to score off singles and a sac fly, picking up three runs. The Bullies then scored 3 more in the 2nd on a 2 out rally and a homerun. Solid pitch and defense took place throughout the rest of the game, with both teams putting up zeroes. Hey Girl Let’s Kick It had multiple base runners, however were unable to get another run across. In Week 4, Schoolyard Bullies looks to keep up their winning ways then they play Almo$t Cla$$y, while Hey Girl, Let’s Kick It looks to bounce back with a win against Juan in the Cochinos.

Saved by the Ball shuts out Pitch Slap, 6-0

The battle between Saved by the Ball and Pitch Slap on the Pabst Blue Ribbon field was a great defensive battle all game long with both teams having opportunities early, but unable to cash in. After both teams went three up and three down in the first, Saved by the Ball led off the second with a pair of singles, but a double play by Pitch Slap quickly snuffed out that rally. In the third Saved by the Ball loaded the bases with two outs, but Pitch Slap got out of the inning unscored upon. In the bottom of the third Pitch Slap led off with a single, but three straight pop outs ended their chances. After 4 innings of goose eggs, a team finally broke through in the fifth and that was Saved by the Ball using small ball to their advantage to plate four runs. They would add on two more in the top of the sixth as insurance. Pitch Slap tried to desperately rally in the final half inning, but they were unable to score. Saved by the Ball looks to take down 2 Legit 2 Kick in Week 4, while Pitch Slap looks for a win against Welcome to Death Row

Juan and the Cochinos had 2 Legit 2 Kick first loss, win 14-1

The Cochinos were trying to hand 2 Legit 2 Kick their first loss of the regular season, while 2 Legit 2 Kick had other plans. The Cochinos quickly jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first on some small ball and then some excellent place kicking to the outfield that found grass. They would add on 3 more in the second inning in the same fashion. 2 Legit 2 Kick on the other hand ran into offensive struggles for the first time this season. 2 Legits best threat was in the botton of the third inning when they loaded the bases with one out on three singles. However, they were unable to get any runs across while the Cochins induced a force at home and a pop up to first base. 2 Legit 2 Kick finally got a run on the board in the final inning on a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly to left center, but this was all they could manage is Juan and the Cochinos walked away with a 14-1 victory. Juan and the Cochinos looks to defeat Hey Girl, Let’s Kick It in Week 4, while 2 Legit 2 Kick looks to bounce back with a win against Saved by the Ball.

Bar Report
Flip cup, Dancing and a ton of socializing was the theme at the bar. While ballers discussed their America themed costumes, King of the Hill was in the back. The Final Four consisted of a pair of 2 Legit 2 Kick teammates and a pair of Almo$t Cla$$y teammates. In the end, both of the finalists were from Cla$$y with Austin F. defeating Sophie K. in a flip off that needed instant replay.

Week 2 of the Summer 2016 Golden State Kickball league got underway in Oakland on Thursday Night and the four teams that won in Week 1 were looking to stay undefeated, while the rest were looking to get their first wins on the season.  After Week 2 was said and done, only two undefeated teams remained…

Welcome to Death Row and Hey Girl, Let’s Kick It battle to 3-3 Tie

Welcome to Death Row looked to avenge their first week loss by showing up in camouflage to sneak up on Hey Girl, Lets Kick It! Hey Girl decided to flip the script and sneak up on Death Row by getting their first 3 kickers on base. A couple of base hits got a pair of runs in the top of the first for Hey Girl. Death Row countered with three of their own in the bottom of the first using the same strategy as Hey Girl. Innings 2 through 5 were a wash with both teams getting runners in scoring position, but never converting to get them home. Staring at another loss, Hey Girl came up big in the top of the 6th, getting their lead off kicker on. Death Row collapsed on defense allowing an error to get the runner home and tie the game. Luckily, Death Row got their D back in gear and only allowed 1 run. Death Row were looking for the walk off at the end of the 6th, but couldn’t get anybody on and the game ended in a 3-3 tie. In Week 3, Hey Girl, Let’s Kick it looks to defeat Schoolyard Bullies, while Welcome to Death Row looks to take down Almo$t Cla$$y.

Almo$t Cla$$y stays Undefeated with 6-4 Comeback win against Saved by the Ball

A pair veteran teams battled it out on the grass with Almo$t Cla$$y looking to stay undefeated, while Saved by the Ball had other ideas. In the bottom of the first, Saved by the Ball used some small ball and a sacrifice fly to plate their first run. Almo$t Cla$$y had trouble scoring scoring for the first four innings, however Saved by the Ball could not find a way to add on to their 1-0 lead, which would prove crucial. In the top of the fifth, Almo$t Cla$$y plated four runs, capped off by a three run home run that caught the chalk in left field. Saved by the Ball wouldn’t go down without a fight and kicked a homer to deep right field to cut the deficit to 4-3. Almo$t Cla$$y would add on a pair of insurance runs in the top of the fifth to make the score 6-3. With Saved by the Ball down to their last out, they began to rally and plated a run to cut the deficit to 6-4. With the go ahead run at the plate, a short pop up to left field secured the win for Almo$t Cla$$y. In Week 3, Almo$t Cla$$y looks to stay undefeated when they play Welcome to Death Row, while Saved by the Ball looks to bounce back with a win against Pitch Slap

Schoolyard Bullies takes Late Lead, Hangs on to Beat Juan and the Cochinos, 4-3

The battle between a pair of veteran teams in Schoolyard Bullies and Juan and the Cochinos was on display on Thursday. The Cochinos jumped out to a 1-0 in the bottom of the first with some aggressive baserunning and small ball. The same formula worked for the Cochinos again in the bottom half of the second. The Bullies had trouble scoring in the first three innings, however they tied the game at 2 in the top of the fourth on four singles and a double. After that the defenses kicked in and held each other scoreless until the crucial 6th inning. In the top half, Bullies got a one out single and then a double to move the runners to second and third. A walk loaded the bases and then a single to right field plated a pair and gave Bullies a 4-2 lead. Juan and the Cochinos then stepped up their defense and got out of the rest of the inning unscathed. In the bottom half, the Cochinos fought back with a one out walk, and then a single sent the runner to third base. A single loaded the bases putting the tying run at second base and the winning run at first. The kicker for Cochinos kicked a fly ball to left field and the fielder made an acrobatic play to hang onto the catch. The runner from third was able to score on the sacrifice fly, however, the runner tagging from second to third slipped on the way and was tagged out, preserving the 4-3 win for the Bullies. In Week 3, Schoolyard Bullies looks to get a win against Hey Girl, Let’s Kick It, while Juan and the Cochinos look to bounce back against 2 Legit 2 Kick.

2 Legit 2 Kick still undefeated, takes down Pitch Slap, 8-1

2 Legit 2 Quit and Pitch Slap were looking for a win Thursday and 2 Legit quickly jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first taking advantage of Pitch Slap’s defense. Pitch Slap would bounce back with a run of their own to cut the deficit to 4-1. 2 Legit then plated single runs in the second, third, fifth and sixth to take a comfortable lead. Meanwhile, Pitch Slap struggled to get their offense going all night long. Their best chance to score again was in the fifth inning with runners at first and third with two out. However the kicker lined into a double play at first base and 2 Legit 2 Quit got out of the jam. In Week 3, 2 Legit 2 Kick stay undefeated when they play Juan and the Cochinos, while Pitch Slap looks to defeat Saved by the Ball.

Bar Report

Thursday night following the games, kickballers swarmed to the bar to watch the end of the bay bridge series, engage in friendly banter, enjoy some drinks, and flip some cups! The music was blasting in the front room while teams faced on in flip cup in the back room. Later in the evening, King of the Hill took place for the second week in a row. Pitch Slap had the greatest showing, but couldn’t get a player into the finals. Instead, it was Sophie of Almo$t Cla$$y and Sheldrick from Death Row. In a heated competition, Sophie came out on top. Will somebody dethrone her next week or will she remain queen?
